Tips to Manage Dry Eyes
Dry eyes, also known as dry eye syndrome, is a health condition that can negatively harm life quality. It can affect one’s productivity and reduce the time spent with family and friends. Following a study, it was reported that approximately 29 million people in the country would have dry eye syndrome by 2022. To help you, here are four easy tips for managing dry eyes.
- Thoroughly wash your eyelids and eyelashes
Every time you wash your face, give adequate attention to your eyelashes and eyelids. Add a preservative-free eyelid cleanser or any baby shampoo to warm water and wash your lower and upper eyelids gently. Furthermore, when you apply facial creams, or makeup be particularly careful about not rushing through around the eyelids and eyelashes as it can irritate the eyes or get into the tear film.
- Blink your eyes often
Blinking though voluntary is stopped when you stare at a screen for too long. Therefore, experts suggest that you must consciously make an effort to blink your eyes often. It can help you overcome dry eye syndrome, especially if your job involves staring at a screen for long hours. When you blink frequently, it renews the tear film, which protects and moisturizes the eyes. On average, a person blinks about 10 to 15 times in a minute. However, this number reduces by half or even more if you are working on a screen.
- Use eye-drops or ointments
You can find a myriad of non-prescription products to treat dry eye syndrome. Artificial tears or eye drops can also bring temporary relief. However, be aware of eye drops that contain preservatives. These come in multi-dose vials and have preservatives that curtail bacterial growth once the vial is open. If your eyes react badly to an eye drop containing preservatives, you should stop and opt for eye drops that do not contain preservatives. You can use ointments as well to prevent dry eyes. These are thicker than the eye drops and coat the eyeballs, offering long-term relief from dry eye syndrome. However, it is best advised to use the ointments before bedtime, as it can impair your vision until its effect lasts.
- Stay hydrated
Your body needs water to stay healthy. When you drink enough water, your eyes stay moist. So, do not wait till you are thirsty to drink water because then you are already dehydrated. Thus, it is recommended to consume at least eight to ten glasses of water in a day. You can also add other fluids in your diet that do not contain caffeine or alcohol. The addition of water-rich foods, such as cucumber or watermelon, also helps.
