Rare Types of Lymphoma
The cancer of the lymphatic system, lymphoma, starts in the lymphocytes, a kind of white blood cells initially present in the body to fight diseases. Since cancer is found in the lymph system, it tends to spread or metastasize rapidly to the different organs and tissues around the body. There are a few common and rare types of lymphoma.
Rare types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma
- Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphomas
The mycosis fungoides and sezary syndrome are the cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. The lymphomas start in your skin.
- Cutaneous B-Cell Lymphomas
These lymphomas are rare and also attack the skin.
- Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma
These lymphomas affect the spinal cord and the brain. This lymphoma is prevalent in older people and those who have a compromised or a weak immune system.
- Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia
In a few cases, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia may not showcase any symptoms for a few years. It is a rare and slow-progressing lymphoma.
- Burkitt Lymphoma
It is one of the fastest-growing lymphoma, which is more prevalent in children and young adults. This type of lymphoma mostly affects males. The disease initially starts in the mature B-lymphocytes of the body. Usually, people in developing countries have this type of lymphoma. It is a type of lymphoma, which rapidly grows, and needs immediate treatment. Burkitt lymphoma is only seen in two percent of the total lymphoma cases.
Rare types of Hodgkin Lymphoma
- Lymphocyte Depleted Hodgkin Lymphoma
It is a rare type of lymphoma and is seen in only 1% of people affected by the disease. It is more common in older people and is usually diagnosed when the disease has been aggravated to an advanced stage or begun attacking the body’s different organs. This type of lymphoma is prevalent in people who have HIV infection. This lymphoma may be seen in the liver, abdomen, bone marrow, and spleen.
- Lymphocyte-rich Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma (LRCHL)
It is another rare subtype of HL, accounting for 5 to 6 % of the total HL cases. LRCHL is common in males and affects people who are in their 30s and 40s. Usually, people who have this lymphoma are diagnosed in the beginning stage only. It is the reason why they respond well to the treatment. This lymphoma is present in more than a couple of lymph nodes and affects the upper body. - Nodular Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma (NLPHL)
It is a special and rare type of HL and is usually different from the ones mentioned above. A total of about 4-5% of the total HL cases are of this type. Studies prove that there are several similarities between NHL and NLPHL. However, its features are quite similar to the lymphocyte-rich HL. Usually, people with NLPHL are diagnosed early and respond well to the treatment.
